		<description><![CDATA[There are a lot of other factors. The male might be more elaborate than the default, but the clothing is still very generic. It says the character isn&#039;t a one hour old character, but isn&#039;t anything special either.

My tiny mushroom avatar gets more attention than any other avatar I&#039;ve used, and it&#039;s not because people think it looks hot... it&#039;s because it&#039;s different. Being different and standing out of the crowd make a big difference in SL. An avatar that was designed to look stereotypically ugly might actually get more attention for being unique.]]></description>

Thus the one conclusion I feel safe making: &quot;virtual appearance changes the way that people interact with you.&quot;  I wouldn&#039;t feel safe being much more specific than that, at this point.]]></description>

Absolutely it could also affect participant behavior, because if they&#039;re familiar with SL at all, they will also be aware of the social status implied by their avatar.  They&#039;ll know when they&#039;re likely to be perceived as a casual/throwaway contact and when they&#039;re likely to be taken seriously.  Wearing a default avatar in any MMO connotes temporary, disposable, anonymous, visitor, or complete rookie.
